local saints

A new thing I’ve discovered in David Farmer’s amusingly dry Oxford Dictionary of Saints – a list of British placenames with their associated saints, many of them local. Here are the Oxfordshire extracts, with pre-schism saints plus Margaret of Scotland:

Abingdon, Oxon. Birinus, Elstan, Ethelwold, Vincent of Saragossa.

Adderbury, Oxon. Edburga of Bicester.

Bampton, Oxon. Beornwald.

Berinsfield, Oxon. Birinus.

Bicester, Oxon. Edburga of Bicester.

Charlbury, Oxon. Diuma.

Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxon. Agilbert, Birinus.

East Hendred, Oxon. Amand.

Hinton Waldrist, Oxon. Walaric.

Oxford, Oxon. Aldate, Bede the Venerable, Budoc, Dunstan, Ebbe, Frideswide, Giles, Grimbald, Margaret of Scotland

Shorthampton, Oxon. Eloi.

Stanton Harcourt, Oxon. Edburga of Bicester.

I hope they will all turn up on the calendar in due course, but I will review this next year and see whether any have been missed. We here should be getting to know them best of all. Perhaps one day we will celebrate the Synaxis of the Saints of Oxfordshire!

Holy St Frideswide, St Birinus and all the saints of Oxfordshire, pray to God for us.
