Winchester

Yesterday we made a flying visit, in the sunny part of a happy afternoon, to Winchester Cathedral. This wasn’t planned, and I wished I had prepared a bit as several saints are connected with this ancient church: St Swithun and St Aethelwold were both bishops of Winchester and Swithun’s shrine is still in the retroquire – surmounted these days by a striking deeis of nine icons (SS Birinus and Peter, an Archangel, the Mother of God, Christ, John the Evangelist, an Archangel, SS Paul and Swithun) by Fedorov. Ealswitha, wife of Alfred the Great, is buried at St Mary’s Abbey there.
