Today (6 February) we commemorate SS. Mael and Mun, bishops and nephews of St. Patrick (ca. 488).
I am too confused by the various stories here, and so, it appears, is everyone else who has tried to unravel who and how many these people may have been, never mind how they spelled their names… Irish bishoprics are involved, kinship with St Patrick, a close relationship with St Brigid (one of them)…
- Wikipedia article on St Mel – whoever heard of a holiday to celebrate being single? All very well perhaps if it’s the life you’ve chosen…
- celt-saints article – very useful for unravelling
- Entry in O’Hanlon’s Irish Saints
Some days are just like that. In the very useful Roman Catholic phrase, sometimes we just have to offer it up.
Holy St Patrick and the saints of Ireland, pray to God for us.
