St Ermengitha of Thanet

Today (30 July) we commemorate St. Ermengyth (Ermengitha, Eormengitha) of Thanet. She was the sister of Ermenburga (Domneva), foundress and abbess of the convent at Thanet that was to become a house of many holy women. She has this parallel with Mechtild of Hackeborn, that as the sister of a great abbess, she herself ‘served in the same house with great fervour’ and was known for her great devotion so that her tomb became a site of pilgrimage.

I think I have mentioned before the Minster Abbey Nuns, who have brought Benedictine tradition back to Thanet – and are very hospitable!

Holy St Ermengitha, pray to God for us!
