St Aethelwine of Lindsey

Happy Feast of the holy glorious and all-praised leaders of the Apostles, Peter and Paul!
Troparion Tone 4
Leaders of the Apostles and teachers of the world,
pray to the Master of all
to grant peace to the world
and great mercy to our souls.

Today (29 June) in the calendar of early British saints we commemorate St. Æthelwine (Ethelwine, Elwin), bishop of Lindsey (8th C). According to orthodoxengland his feast is 3 May… One day perhaps I will figure all this out… ha. Once again celt-saints fishes us out of a miry place: ‘Died 692. This Saint Elwin may be the same person as Saint Ethelwin of Lindsey (f.d. May 3), although the date given for the latter is 8th century. Farmer states that today’s Elwin studied in Ireland. He was consecrated bishop of Lindsey in 680 by Saint Theodore the Greek of Canterbury (f.d. September 19) at the request of King Ethelred of Mercia. The venerable Saint Bede (f.d. May 25) calls him a ‘vir sanctus.’ Elwin does not appear to have had an early cultus (Benedictines, Farmer).’

Holy Father Aethelwine, pray to God for us.
